Our Story

Folk Horizons is an educational non-profit organization focused on improving access to, and encouraging the expression of, traditional folk performing arts. Our charter is to involve individuals in folk music, dance, song, and storytelling and to provide performance opportunities for artists that are members of the folk arts community.

We believe that people involved in a folk activity develop a broader appreciation for folk traditions. The experience often becomes a catalyst for long term involvement with, and support for, the folk arts. Social interaction between individuals and within communities also is enhanced.

The programs of Folk Horizons promote the folk arts through presentation, education, and participation. All activities are open to the public and many are free of charge.

Education

Within all productions of Folk Horizons, emphasis is placed on education. Involving youth and encouraging their participation is a priority within our programming.

Participation

Our programs also provide opportunities for participation. An activity can involve joining a folk dance, an opportunity to sing, or performing a folk tradition.
